Millions of consumers have already had genetic testing using a direct-to-consumer (DTC) kit, and thousands more will find one under their Christmas tree in a few days. In addition to learning that they are 14% Dutch and have sticky ear wax, thousands of people will learn that the person they know as Dad, Aunt Betsy, or sister Nancy is not actually related to them.

This kind of DNA news is not uncommon, and can be surprising, welcome, unwelcome, or even emotionally devastating. In fact, these family surprises are so common that there are Facebook groups devoted to consumers who have received them.
