Ellen T. Matloff, My Gene Counsel President and CEO, was featured in Nature last week discussing how misinterpreted results of genetic testing for cancer risk can result in unnecessary surgery.
This story follow’s Angelina Jolie Pitt’s disclosure that she recently underwent a bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy, her second prophylactic surgery since testing positive for a BRCA1 mutation. Her public comments have sparked a wider discussion on hereditary cancer, and treatment and prevention courses, and may also contribute to a surge in demand for genetic testing.
Matloff warned that as genetic testing and counseling becomes more prolific, it’s important that patients seek out well-qualified practitioners. “This is the time to invest in someone who is really certified in this area,” she says.
