Last week, three House Democrats called on the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) to stop collecting DNA from migrants in government custody. Democratic Reps. Rashida Tlaib (MI), Veronica Escobar (TX), and Congressional Hispanic Caucus Chairman Joaquin Castro (TX) called the collection of DNA samples a “serious human rights issue” in their letter to DHS Secretary Chad Wolf.
As a genetic counselor, who specializes in genetic testing, do I think we should be cautious about collecting a small DNA sample from undocumented migrants? Yes.
